April Ross

April Ross is one of only a few female beach volleyball athletes to win medals at many Olympics. Alix Klineman is the newest Olympian who will be joining her at Tokyo. In addition, Ross hopes to win her first Olympic gold. At 39, it may be her last chance. However, she's convinced that top prizes are in reach. Ross stated via NBC Boston: "If we try our best, and even playing well I'm sure we'll get the gold medal." "I'm trying to also try to have a bit of luck." Ross was a Californian born in the city of Costa Mesa in 1982. Her family lived in the area with her father, mother and younger sister. Ross competed in many activities while at Newport Harbor High School. As a prep-athlete she played indoor track and volleyball. When she played in the final sport, she clearly stood out. As per her biography, during high school she played volleyball as an outside setter (middle blocker) and the setter (outside blocker). To honor her achievements, she received the Gatorade Award for National Player in 1999. The year 2000 was the time she won the Orange County Athlete of the of the year for volleyball. Ross Klineman and Ross may have started working together at the beginning of 2017, but Ross was already an established athlete at the beach prior to when they came together. In fact, she's been able to win multiple events, one of which was with a legendary volleyball player. Between 2007 and 2013, she was partnered by Jennifer Kessy, who is currently her coach. Kessy as well as Ross proved to be strong on the international arena, taking home the world championship in 2009 with each other. In 2012, the pair took silver in London's Olympics. Misty Maytreanor's legendary team as well as Kerri Jennings were the winners of gold. Ross Jennings replaced May-Treanor as she left the team. The pair took bronze at the Rio Olympics for beach volleyball. Ross was a Trojans player for the USC in her college prior to becoming a professional. Her time at the school was one to remember. She was a All-American as well as Pac-10 freshman of the year in the year 2000, a young freshman. In 2000, her Trojans were also able to make it to the Final Four. During her sophomore year she was devastated by a personal setback, but she was able to make it back as an All-American. In her last two years, she took the Trojans to the top of the mountain and clinched consecutive national championships. She was a fantastic volleyball player and won the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the best female volleyball player in the NCAA. Ross played international relations as a student at USC. Unfortunately Ross mother Margie was not able to witness Ross rise to the top levels of beach volleyball superstardom. Ross's mother died of breast cancer when she was in her sophomore year at USC. She continues to keep her mother's memory close and dear. Margie at the beach as well as in everyday life, continues to inspire her.
